The first international summer school held at the Art University of Isfahan. The International Summer School is organized by College of Architecture and Urban Design, Art University of Isfahan in Isfahan and ENSA-Versailles University, Paris, France. It has been a pleasant event for sharing the ideas and teaching new aspect of architecture in relationship to the environment. The 8 days workshops and lectures have gained renowned reputation as a remarkable platform for international students to meet and communicate. International as well as national students, professors and experts will commit themselves intensively to studio works, discussions and lectures.
The subject of the Summer school was “Isfahan, the city which is going to lose its river”. The water no longer flows through Isfahan. The Zayandeh Rud which crosses the city is now practically dry, its course being diverted in the 2000s to irrigate arable land upstream of the city. Only a trickle of water passes through the arches of the Allahverdi Khan Bridge in winter. We will first try to understand the fabulous irrigation system - which allowed this garden city to spread out like a paradise on a desert and hostile plateau by seeking water in the mountains - but we will analyze especially the very specific and contemporary role of this ornamental river wishing to be taken as a significant river. The development of the Zayandeh Rud - whose width of the bed is artificially amplified when it runs through the city - testifies to the importance of a real hydraulic scenography. Its bridges are equipped with a device of embellishment that combines dams and wave-breakers forming a fan shape and allows retaining the water table through eddies in order to amplify and bring the image of an untameable liquid mass in motion to its paroxysm. Some of these seventeenth-century bridges - similar to genuine open-air public lounges - could be compared to Chenonceau, the Chateau-Pont de Diane in Poitier and its large gallery constructed on the Cher.
The 2017 summer school is co-organized by Iran and France team and many national and international sponsors and supports. Field trips to Shanghai and Yangtze River Delta will provide opportunities for students to be fully immersed into local culture. The final works will be evaluated by the IDSS jury and three most prominent ones will be awarded.
